Welcome to another episode of Sounding Out The City... This week’s selections: rare-grooves, hiphop beats, dub, dub-step, rare funk, nujazz, jazzy nu soul, latin-jazz, funky breakbeats, and dance-floor jazz. We start off with some vintage (1966!) piano-led jazz with proto hiphop beats from Canada’s own Galt MacDermot, who’s been sampled by the likes of Dilla and Handsome Boy Modeling School. We then get into an unreleased DJ Day track from 1999-2000 that still sounds fresh today. Then more unreleased beats, this time from Conceit out of California. A classic dub gem circa 1977 from Augustus Pablo comes next, which transitions into a super bass-heavy wobbler of a dubstepper from Bass Clef. After that we hear some rare funk from “1984” and Gene Anderson before we hit some funky jazz by Herbie Williams, which leads into some new music from Jazzpresso, Clyde, and Nicole Willis. We then take a step back into time with a rare latin-groover, a jazz-dancer, and a wild Brazilian track with feverish keys and real heavy bass. It all comes to a wrap with a very deep, beat-layered and sample-heavy killer from Dcastillo. Enjoy! ___________________ 00::Sounding Out The City Intro 01::Galt MacDermot – Coffee Cold 02::DJ Day – People Music (Intro) 03::Conceit – Speaker Phase Beat (excerpts) 04::Augustus Pablo – East Of The River Nile 05::Bass Clef – Cannot Be Straightened 06::1984 – There’s A Wrinkle In Our Time 07::Gene Anderson – Gigolo 08::Herbie Williams – Funky From The Get Go 09::Jazzpresso – Pine Under 10::Clyde – Roll Of The Beast 11::Nicole Willis – Feeling Free (Hoop’s remix) 12::Eddie Cano Quintet – Slip Slip (El Res Balon) 13::The Pharaoh – Damballa 14::Som Tres – Tanga 15::Dcastillo – Speeding Bullet ___________________ Shout outs to Vero A, Shane of "The Sureshot Symphony", B. in Watford, Richie, and Kevin. We get going with a sleazy hiphop instrumental, then a broken beat latin-tinged joint from DJ Day and keeping that sound with Bulljun’s “Sho’Nuff”, and Unconventional Science’s “Enojo”. Then it’s onto a funk re-edit from Kenny Dope followed by some Turkish funk and an unreleased gem called “The Get It Now” before we hear some more sleazy sounds—this time it’s a rare-groover from Italy’s Armando Travaioli. We then move onto a heavy African funk-rock killer off a fairly new comp, which is followed by a nice rap re-edit from Graham Mushnik. Unconventional Science comes back again with some sick beats before we hear some house music from Chromeo and some 2001 business from Brother of Soul. It all wraps up with some great soul from Joe Bravo and Annette Poindexter. We get it going with an unreleased gem from PZ (I’m lovin’ his sound a lot lately!), then onto a 2007 track from Canada found on a Stones Throw comp, followed by a jazz classic. Next up, we move into some instrumental action from Portugal circa 2002, then a couple from Bullion before we hear a couple of really nice remixes of classic soul and a 2007 hiphop anthem. After that, we get a funky ‘hand clapper’ from Bo Diddley, and one of my favourite classic rock tracks. We then get into some latin heaters, a rare disco funk cut, classic samba from the Trio Macoto, and end it off with a quicky from Sputnik Brown.
